Why Rams’ Aaron Donald signed with Kanye West’s Donda Sports: ‘A helluva opportunity to open up a lot of different doors’

Aaron Donald’s wild offseason continues. As the Rams and the 31-year-old defensive tackle continue to negotiate a new contract heading into 2022, Donald isn’t resting on his laurels securing other deals. Donald became the second athlete and the first athlete currently on a team to sign with Kanye West’s Donda Sports, as he joins Antonio Brown with the brand.

Donald made the announcement on Brandon Marshall, Adam Jones and LeSean McCoy’s I Am Athlete podcast.

It’s a big fish for a relatively new brand. Donald talked about why he decided to join.

“It was an opportunity,” Donald said on the podcast. “…My wife actually do my marketing. You know she does a lot of my marketing. So it was an opportunity that came to us — me and her — you know it made sense … The family atmosphere that they got at Donda Sports, and my wife being a part of that, for me it was a no-brainer.”

Donald also began to talk about what the deal would entail.

“Ain’t nothing in full circle but we’ve been talking,” Donald continued. “We got this plan that my wife’s been talkin’ and getting things done, it’s ’bout to be coming to fruition soon.”

What is Donda Sports?

When Antonio Brown signed with Donda Sports, in February, it put out a statement saying Brown would be helping to bring a sports focus to the brand.

“Donda Sports was founded with the vision of providing holistic support to athletes during and beyond their sports career,” the statement said. “Donda Sports is a limitless organization centered on professional and wellness support in equal measure with the ambition to work with athletes across all genders, divisions, and sports.”

It’s easy to see why that could appeal to a player like Donald, vague though it may be. Donald clearly has lofty ambitions outside of the NFL, and he seems to think West’s goals align with his.

“Donda Sports is something close to [West], obviously, with his mother and everything,” Donald said on the podcast. “So he definitely wants this to be something that’s top tier and something he’s serious about.”

What’s next for Aaron Donald?

Antonio Brown has already openly speculated his NFL career could be over, and Donald appears to be figuring out similar things for himself.

The Super Bowl champion has been sending mixed messages about playing next season, waffling between emphatically saying to “run it back” at the Super Bowl parade and reportedly considering retirement if he and the Rams can’t come to terms on a new contract.

Donald was seen with West, Brown, and Floyd Mayweather earlier this offseason at Mayweather’s 45th birthday party. As Donald said on the podcast: “I think it’s a helluva opportunity to open up a lot of different doors and a lot of different things outside of football that I wanna be involved in, that I wanna do, that my wife wanna do. So to be a part of that, and be one of the best first athletes to be a part of that, it’s pretty dope. We’re excited about it, and we’re gonna see where this thing goes.”
