Veldman’s Career High 30 Kills Boosts JMU Over Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Junior Miëtte Veldman tallied a career high 30 kills in James Madison volleyball’s close 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 14-25, 25, 21, 15-10) victory over host Marshall on Friday evening at the Cam Henderson Center.
 
The Dukes improved to 18-4 (12-1 SBC) while the Herd fell to 7-18 (1-12 SBC).
 
Veldman recorded a hitting percentage of .540 and earned her eighth double-double of the season with 16 digs. Bre Reid hit .281 on a career high 18 kills while Caroline Dozier was one short of her season high of 54 assists.
 
Marshall out hit JMU .303 – .296 and had 69 kills over the Dukes’ 66 taking the Dukes to only their fifth five set match of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The match started off with a very neck-and-neck set, but a final 4-1 run from the Herd gave them the first set.
 
Second Set
The Dukes started with a 10-6 lead, never trailing for the remainder of the set. A 3-0 run from the Herd closed the gap to the Dukes, but a final point evened out the match.
 
Third Set
Marshall broke out with a 4-0 start and JMU was able to catch up, but still trailed the remainder of the set.  Small two- and three-point runs gave the Herd the edge and put them up 2-1 in the match.
 
Fourth Set
JMU battled to control the fourth set, taking a 11-6 lead to start things off. The Dukes notched eight two-point runs to help them maintain the lead, with Veldman beating her career high 25 kills in the fourth set to take the match to a fifth.
 
Fifth Set
A 4-0 run started thing of for the Dukes which the Herd evened out to 7-7. JMU pulled ahead with a 3-0 run followed by a 4-0 run to win the close match.
 
UP NEXT
The Dukes will stay in Huntington to wrap up the series against Marshall on Saturday at 1 p.m. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
