DAVISVILLE — Izzy West dreams of studying criminology.

“I really want to go to Ohio State University and become a criminologist and study the behavior and mindset of criminals,” she said.

West’s mother, Holly, is a therapist at St. Marys Correctional Center. West loves listening to her mother share stories.

“I’ve just kind of gained a passion for that and I’ll watch documentaries about that kind of stuff,” she said.

After earning her degree, West would like to travel to different prisons and study prisoners’ mindsets in person. She said she would like to travel to different countries as well and learn about different prisoner backgrounds and their criminal history.

“I really like to travel, so I think that would be really cool to go to different prisons and do that,” she said.

West attends school at Hamilton Middle and has a 3.25 GPA. Her favorite subjects to study are math and history. She enjoys using different solutions to problem solve in math and learn about past events that happened in history.

West decided to start learning Mandarin last year after speaking to one of her teachers at the Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg. She decided she wanted to do something to keep her busy. She loves showing others what she has learned and is excited to find out more. She plans to continue learning Mandarin through a language learning app.

West also enjoys playing soccer. She plays indoor soccer at the Elite Sports Center in Parkersburg and with the Vienna Rec Soccer league. She has been playing for the past seven years and said she was one of the best players on her team. This year, she has been asked to join the River Valley Soccer Club and is excited to play with her new teammates.

West volunteers in the community at the Humane Society of Parkersburg, with her dad, Brent. In the past, she has also helped clean up trash on Avery Street in Parkersburg.

West even started her own small business selling bandannas and dog collars she has sewed. She learned how to sew through her grandmother Lisa and how to use a sewing machine from her mom. She has been sewing for two years now.

“I would print a guide out and I would lay the cloth on it and cut around it and then sew the pieces together,” she said.

In her spare time, West enjoys drawing flowers and smiley faces, expressing herself through hip-hop dance, spending time with her friends, riding her bike and crocheting with her mom. She also enjoys painting abstract art and receives inspiration from renowned artist Vincent Van Gogh.
