SuperBook Among New Sportsbooks Lined Up For Maryland Sports Betting
Two new mobile sports betting operators began their path to Maryland sports betting Thursday.
On Thursday, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission approved the qualifications of three MD sports betting facilities and two mobile sports wagering license applicants, including SuperBook. The five applicants likely will be on the agenda for the Feb. 15 meeting of the Sports Wagering Wagering Application Review Commission, which has to approve the licenses.
Maryland sports betting began with retail sportsbooks in December 2021. Online sports betting in the state started in November 2022, with seven mobile sportsbooks.
SuperBook heads for Maryland sports betting
The possibility of SuperBook in Maryland became known when the operator partnered with the Baltimore Orioles last year. The SuperBook Sports Lounge at Camden Yards will open this year.
SuperBook applied for an online sports wagering license, as well as qualifications as a sports wagering facility operator and online sports wagering operator. With the facility operator license, SuperBook can provide retail sportsbook services for licensees. The Orioles were one of 17 entities to receive a retail license in MD sports betting legislation.
SuperBook has licenses in seven states:
Crab Sports ready for Maryland
The MLGCC found qualified an application from Crab Sports Maryland for mobile sports betting. Crab Sports Maryland partnered with Gaming Innovation Group, GiG, as its operator partner.
According to the MLGCC presentation, Crab Sports Inc. was established in 2021 as a private entity with a leadership group with more than 20 years of experience in European gaming markets.
With up to 60 mobile licenses available in Maryland, just 12 have been spoken for through the two applications Thursday.
Three more retail sportsbooks coming to Maryland
The MLGCC qualified three additional retail facility licenses:
- Kathe P. Hospitality for Michael’s on the South River in Riva
- Canton Gaming for The Greene Turtle Sports Bar & Grille in Canton
- Canton Gaming for The Greene Turtle Sports Bar & Grille in Towson
Canton partnered with Parx Interactive as its facility operator. Kathe P. Hospitality has not announced an operator partner.
Maryland sports betting continues growth
According to a Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency report this month, online sportsbooks in Maryland took $478.2 million in December wagers in their first full month of operation.
FanDuel dominated the market with 49.4% of the handle, or $236.2 million.
Betfred, betPARX and Fanatics Sportsbook also have online licenses but have not launched. Earlier this month, Fanatics began its sports betting journey by opening its first retail sportsbook at FedExField.
