Sports reporter Jared Phillips leaving WTEN
Jared Phillips is leaving NEWS10ABC. The sports reporter has been with the station for two years coming to the region from Springfield, Ill. where he covered high school sports for Channel1450.com, which broadcast solely online.
“The past two years have been a fantastic opportunity filled with growth both professionally and personally,” wrote Phillips, in part, in his departure notice on Twitter.
He went on to thank local athletes, coaches and administrators, as well as several of his colleagues — two of whom have also departed (Michael Barth and Liana Bonavita).
Philips says he is waiting till he visits his new home base later this week to announce publicly where he is headed. He did confirm he’s staying in television.
He is the 19th broadcast personality to leave his role in 2022 and the fifth on-air staffer to depart from WTEN/NEWS10ABC. Previously this year, Tim Lake, Mary Wilson, Spencer Tracy and the aforementioned Bonavita said good-bye to their roles at the Nexstar-owned station.
His July 8 departure theoretically leaves the station with Griffin Haas as the only sports reporter. Nexstar does have one on-air position listed in the careers section of their website, but there is only a single/general mention of covering sports (listed along with politics, news and social) on that posting.
More on what will happen there when I hear back from WTEN’s news director.
As for Phillips, follow him on Twitter for updates.
