KENNESAW, Ga. – After a record-breaking year in 2021, Kennesaw State quarterback Xavier Shepherd was named to the Athlon Sports’ 2022 Preseason All-America Team. The award comes one week after the Owls were ranked No. 9 in the Athlon FCS Preseason Top 25.
Shepherd took over as a starter in week two of the 2021 season. During his sophomore campaign, the quarterback was named a STATS Perform FCS First Team All-American, HERO Sports First Team All-American and Associated Press Third Team All-American. He also took home the Big South Offensive Player of the Year Award and was selected to the All-Big South Conference First-Team.
The KSU signal-caller led the FCS in rushing touchdowns last season with 23. He also set new program records for passing touchdowns in a season (15) and most passing touchdowns in a single game (4). In week six versus Hampton (Oct. 9), Shepherd set a Big South record for most rushing yards in a conference game by a quarterback when he rushed for 179 yards.
The All-American finished the year 77-for-123 (62.2%) with 1,341 passing yards. He also led the team in rushing yards (867) and attempts (240). Shepherd concluded the season as a finalist for the Walter Payton Award and was named to the official watch list for the FCS National Performer of the Year.
