Simplification’s owner living American dream

Very few owners of Triple Crown series-caliber runners have the skills and experience that Tami Bobo possesses. The owner of Simplification has been working with horses for about 30 years — Arabians, Quarter Horses and now Thoroughbreds — and learned the business from the ground up.

Through those decades, she has climbed from young groom to successful professional horse trader to the co-owner of a horse that was fourth in the Kentucky Derby and now is a legit contender in the Preakness at Pimlico Race Course.

Preakness favorite Epicenter arrives at Pimlico

Saturday’s Preakness Stakes favorite Epicenter arrived at Pimlico Race Course shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday following his 10 1/2-hour van ride from Louisville, Kentucky.

Scott Blasi, who oversees Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen’s Churchill Downs division, was on hand to meet the van and unload Epicenter.

Epicenter, and his stablemates for other Preakness Weekend stakes, arrived about 10 minutes after the Chad Brown-trained Preakness contender Early Voting, the Wood Memorial runner-up.

The Woodlawn Vase: Sport’s most unique trophy

The Woodlawn Vase, presented to the winners of the legendary Preakness Stakes, has long been considered one of the most intricate, unique and expensive trophies in all of sport.

Designed in 1860 by Tiffany & Co. for the Woodlawn Racing Association in Louisville, Kentucky, the vase has a colorful history and is an incredible work of silversmithing.

John Scheinman recently traveled to the Baltimore Museum of Art, where the Woodlawn Vase is displayed and housed for the Maryland Jockey Club. Scheinman got an up-close view of the vase from Brittany Luberda, assistant curator, decorative art, and spoke to Jim Stieff of Stieff Silver, the maker of the replica trophies given to the Preakness winners.

Simplification ‘good and healthy’ for Preakness run

Maryland Jockey Club: Tami Bobo and Tristan De Meric’s Simplification galloped 1 1/2 miles Tuesday morning in preparation for the 147th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.

“He had an easy gallop and then, the last three-eighths (of a mile) an open gallop,” trainer Antonio Sano said.

Simplification, who was rated fourth at 6-1 in the Preakness morning-line after drawing Post No. 1 at Monday’s post-position draw, finished fourth in the May 7 Kentucky Derby, in which he closed from 15th to fourth while racing very wide.

Skippylongstocking gets acquainted with Pimlico

On the morning after arriving in Baltimore by van from Florida Monday, Daniel Alonso’s Skippylongstocking got acquainted with the Pimlico Race Course racetrack over which he is scheduled to run in Saturday’s Preakness Stakes.

“He jogged a mile,” trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said. “Tomorrow, he’ll gallop, and he’ll gallop up to the race.”

Skippylongstocking, who was rated at 20-1 in the morning line after drawing Post No. 9 for the Preakness, has been a bit of a pleasant surprise with his late development.

Preakness legend hopes to continue luck with filly Secret Oath

Secret Oath has eyes on matching Rachel Alexandra and Swiss Skydiver as filly Preakness winners, and she has a Hall of Fame trainer prepping her for Saturday.

At the end of the Stakes Barn, the Captain of the Old Guard, D. Wayne Lukas remains here, as ever. A six-time Preakness champion, Lukas again holds court in Baltimore.

Through all the changes in Triple Crown racing, he remains a constant. His first winner was in 1980 with Codex and he returns to Pimlico every chance he gets. (Story)
