Penny Hardaway first technical foul Memphis basketball coaching career

Read Time:1 Minute, 2 Second

Penny Hardaway has finally done it.

Midway through his fifth season as a college basketball coach at Memphis, his alma mater, Hardaway received the first technical foul of his career. With 15:55 left in Thursday’s home game against SMU, and the Tigers (15-5, 5-2 AAC) leading 64-43, referee Pat Adams assessed a personal foul on Memphis’ Keonte Kennedy.

The call drew Hardaway’s ire. As both teams went to their respective benches for the first media timeout of the second half, the normally mild-mannered coach loudly protested as he walked out to mid-court. A few seconds later, Adams blew his whistle and handed Hardaway the first technical foul of his career.

Last week, Hardaway picked up the 100th win of his career at Cincinnati. But, in the eyes of the NCAA and the university, it was only the 99th. As part of the Independent Accountability Resolution Process’ ruling, Memphis was forced to vacate its win over South Carolina State in the 2019-20 season opener.
