Memorial Tournament 2022 fantasy golf picks, advice, expert rankings: Back Rory McIlroy at Muirfield Village

Read Time:9 Minute, 35 Second

The PGA Tour’s best are heading back to Jack’s Place this week for the 2022 Memorial Tournament, and Muirfield Village Golf Club is expected to present a stern test. Intense renovations were completed early last year, and the Dublin, Ohio course founded by Jack Nicklaus is expected to have more bite. The lightning-fast greens have been restored, length has been added, and the rough should be close to major-tournament quality. Seven of the world’s top 10 players are scheduled to be part of the 2022 Memorial field. World No. 2 Jon Rahm will get another chance to win his second Memorial title, though it won’t be back-to-back. He was almost a lock to do that last year before having to withdraw with a six-stroke lead after three rounds. Patrick Cantlay will be the one looking for consecutive Memorial wins this week after using that opening to beat Collin Morikawa in a playoff last year.

Rahm is the 10-1 favorite in the latest 2022 Memorial Tournament golf odds from Caesars Sportsbook, just ahead of Rory McIlroy (11-1). Cantlay, who also won the 2019 title at Muirfield, is priced at 14-1, followed by Jordan Spieth (18-1), Morikawa (20-1), Cameron Smith (20-1) and Xander Schauffele (20-1). Viktor Hovland (22-1) and Shane Lowry (22-1) also are among the top contenders in the Memorial 2022 field.

Can McIlroy keep up his strong current run and make it pay off if you pay the price ($10,900 at DraftKings) to lock him into your 2022 Memorial Tournament picks? Or would a golfer like Lowry ($9,000) be a better value to free up money for you to build a stronger lineup? Before setting your Fantasy golf rankings or any 2022 Memorial Tournament bets, be sure you check out the Fantasy golf projections from SportsLine fantasy expert Riley Gates.

Gates is a writer for 247Sports and has covered a range of sports for nearly five years. He has followed golf closely for much longer and has a profound knowledge of the sport. He also knows what it takes to win, on the course and in fantasy sports.

At last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge, three of Gates’ top six picks finished in the top four on the final leaderboard, including winner Sam Burns and runner-up Scottie Scheffler. Before the PGA, Gates had both winner Justin Thomas and 30-1 shot Zalatoris, who lost to Thomas in a playoff, among his top five picks.

Gates has been on a roll all season. Before the Wells Fargo Championship, four of his top six players finished in the top five. That included winner Max Homa, a 40-1 long shot, and runners-up Keegan Bradley (35-1) and Matt Fitzpatrick (22-1). He also nailed Jon Rahm as the winner in the Mexico Open, and eight of his 20 picks finished in the top eight at the Masters. Anyone who has followed Gates is way up.

Now, Gates has ranked his top golfers for the 2022 Memorial Tournament (see tickets at StubHub), and you’ll really want to see what he has to say. You can only see his Fantasy golf rankings and Memorial Tournament picks at SportsLine.

2022 Memorial Tournament golf expert picks

Gates thinks McIlroy is a must-own player this week as he aims to continue a hot run. The 33-year-old has three top-10 finishes, including the Masters (second) and PGA Championship (eighth). He also has been among the best overall players on tour, ranking in the top 40 in every strokes gained category. That all-around game puts him at the top of the tour in scoring average (69.15) and points to success at Muirfield. He is 19th in sand saves, 30th in strokes gained around the greens and 34th in strokes gained putting, all critical abilities on this course.

Meanwhile, the Fantasy expert isn’t counting on Morikawa and doesn’t think he should be the anchor for your team. He has finished outside the top 25 four straight times, and his putting and work around the green have been in poor form. He is 120th in strokes gained putting, 160th around the green and 167th on sand saves. Those are key points for succeeding at Jack’s Place, so he can’t be counted on to repeat his success. He won the Workday Charity here in 2020, but his game was in a much better place then, so you’re better off going a different route.

How to set your 2022 Memorial Tournament Fantasy golf rankings

For this week’s event at Muirfield Village, Gates is backing a long shot who comes in at higher than 50-1.
