LANL FOUNDATION NEWS RELEASE
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Foundation, in partnership with the Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund, is proud to announce the recipients of the Foundation’s 2022 Career Pathways Scholarships. Career Pathways Scholarships award up to $3,000 to qualified applicants pursuing a two-year degree, trade or professional certification. The scholarships are made possible by donations from LANL employees, Triad National Security and donors from northern New Mexico.
A grand total of $102,000 was awarded to 43 outstanding Northern New Mexico students. Three students were each awarded $3,000 from the Anchorum St. Vincent/Christus St. Vincent Medical Pathways Scholarship Fund. Two students were each awarded a $1,000 Tim Martin Memorial Scholarship and one student received a $1,000 Marvin Martin Mueller Scholarship, reserved for family members of the Los Alamos County Police Department.
The 2022 Career Pathways Scholarship recipients are pursuing a wide range of degrees and certifications including: welding, cosmetology, commercial driver’s license, pastry arts, nursing, dental assisting, pre-engineering, emergency medical services and more. A third of this year’s recipients are graduating high-school seniors and the remainder are non-traditional students seeking to improve their lives through continued education and training.
Tina Varela, Co-Chair of the Career Pathways Scholarship Selection Committee and an LANL Employee, said that she continuously finds herself “in awe” of these students.
“The thing I am most struck by is the resilience and diversity of these incredible applicants and the stories they tell of their lives,” said Varela. “Their determination to better their lives and the lives of their families and communities by pursuing higher education is exciting and promising. Knowing that Career Pathways scholarships are going to truly deserving students with the goal to move forward, regardless of their background, makes me so proud to be a donor, and is one of the primary reasons I continue to volunteer on this committee.”
