The Sporting News explains everything you need to know about the exciting new cards.

What are the FIFA World Cup FUT Heroes cards?

FUT Heroes have been a part of the FIFA franchise since 2015 and are special Ultimate Team cards designed to represent moments in football history.

There will be a new Heroes format in FIFA 23, with 21 player cards centered around famous World Cup moments or performances in club football.

These cards will feature a special Marvel-themed artwork design that encapsulates their ‘super hero’ essence.

In FIFA 22, FUT Heroes cards were based around celebrations, with the likes of Tim Cahill’s boxing jig, Robbie Keane’s smoking gun dance and Clint Dempsey’s two-finger pose featured.

Who are theΒ FIFA World Cup FUT Heroes in FIFA 23?

There will be 21 FIFA World Cup FUT Heroes cards released, with five being announced on the launch of the initiative – Landon Donovan, Ricardo Carvalho, Claudio Marchisio, Yaya Toure and Park Ji-Sung.

A further four were announced in the days after – Javier Mascherano, Rafael Marquez, Lucio and Diego Forlan.

Landon Donovan – ‘The Brave’

At his first World Cup in 2002, Donovan sealed the USMNT’s passage to the quarter-finals for only the second time with a goal against Mexico.

With his career in its twilight years in 2010, the striker scored the goal that sealed his nation’s place at the top of their group – ahead of England – for the first time since 1930.

The MLS MVP winner has also won five MLS Cups.

Ricardo Carvalho – ‘The Anticipator’

Carvalho famously led Porto to their Champions League triumph in 2003-04 under Jose Mourinho.

While Sergio Aguero scored the goal that won City the trophy, Toure scored a brace in the match before to help keep his team in the title race.

He also appeared at three World Cups for Ivory Coast.

Park Ji-Sung – ‘Tigerheart’

Ji-Sung was the first Asian player to score in three World Cups for his native South Korea.

He also won four Premier League titles and a Champions League with Manchester United.

Javier Mascherano – ‘Octo-Boss’

Known for his ability to play both midfield and defence, Mascherano achieved success wherever he played.

The Argentina international made a World Cup final with his nation in 2014.

At club level with Barcelona, he won the Champions League twice and five La Liga titles.

Diego Forlan – ‘Sunstrike’

After not scoring in his first season for Manchester United, Forlan became a Red Devils hero with a brace to sink Liverpool in his second campaign.
