CVS Health named Violetta Ostafin EVP and chief strategy officer, effective July 11, in today’s bite-sized hospital and health industry news from California, Rhode Island, and Texas.

  • California: Kaiser Permanente recently notified 69,589 patients of a data breach that occurred April 5 when an employee’s emails were accessed by an unauthorized party. According to the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington, the unauthorized access was terminated within a few hours. The compromised emails contained protected health information, which included first and last names and test results. However, the health plan reported that there was no sign the information was accessed or misused in any way. The health system said the employee changed their password and was assigned additional training on safe email practices after the breach. (Bruce, Becker’s Health IT, 6/14)
  • Rhode Island: CVS Health on Wednesday named Violetta Ostafin EVP and chief strategy officer, effective July 11. In her new role, Ostafin will report directly to president and CEO Karen Lynch. She will lead the company’s strategy development across its core businesses and identify new market opportunities and product innovations to help accelerate growth, Becker’s Hospital Review reports. Previously, she served as Aon‘s global COO of health solutions and CEO of Aon’s Latin America health solutions business. She has also served as a managing director and partner at Boston Consulting Group, where she advised large-scale change and strategic expansion for domestic and international companies. • Texas: HCA Healthcare on Wednesday appointed LaSharndra “Sharn” Barbarin as CEO of Medical City Arlington, effective June 27. Since 2015, Barbarin has served as CEO of Medical City Lewisville. “Sharn is an inspiring leader with a proven track record of strategic leadership and focus on growth, physician collaboration, colleague engagement and a mission-driven commitment to delivering an exceptional experience for patients and families,” said Erol Akdamer, president of Medical City Healthcare. “I’m confident Sharn will help lead Medical City Arlington to the next level of excellence.” (Ellison, Becker’s Hospital Review, 6/15)
