Measure C’s business tax on single-use cup charges will take effect on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, for Santa Cruz County.A 25-cent surcharge on single-use cups was put into effect across the county in July after Measure C passed in June. On Sunday, the second half of that measure, a business tax, will take effect.The business tax will require vendors to report how many paper cups they sell and pay the county 12.5 cents per cup sold. Businesses can keep the rest of the 25-cent charge.The current cup charge does not apply to reusable cups, and anyone can avoid the fee by bringing their own liquid receptacle.

Measure C’s business tax on single-use cup charges will take effect on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, for Santa Cruz County.
