FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Oregon took advantage of Wichita State’s wildness and Ariel Carlson’s career-best four RBI night to defeat the Shockers 8-1 in an NCAA Fayetteville Regional elimination game that started on Saturday but finished after midnight on Sunday before 2,941 at Bogle Park.
The Ducks, 33-18, will face No. 4 seed Arkansas in the regional final Sunday at 11 a.m. Pacific. Oregon needs to with that contest to force a deciding game Sunday afternoon. The Razorbacks defeated Oregon 6-2 earlier on Saturday.
How it Happened: Oregon took advantage of Wichita State miscues to score twice in the top of the first. Terra McGowan led off with a single. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and on the play, moved to third on a throwing error on the catcher. On the next pitch, McGowan scored on a passed ball.
Hanna Delgado kept the inning going with a walk and stole second. An out later, she went to third on a wild pitch. Ariel Carlson plated Delgado with an RBI ground out for a 2-0 lead.
Wichita State got to Oregon starter Stevie Hansen for a run on three hits in the bottom of the first, but Hansen settled in from there on.
Oregon doubled up in the top of the third. McGowan led off with her second hit of the game and scored on Ariel Carlson’s opposite field home run. Carlson’s team-leading 15th homer of the season cleared the fence in right center field.
The Ducks again took advantage the Shockers’ wildness, plus a clutch RBI single by Allee Bunker, to make it 7-1 in the top of the fourth inning. Jasmine Williams walked and stole second base. McGowan walked and both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Delgado walked to load the bases before Williams scored from third on a wild pitch. Bunker scored both McGowan and Delgado on an RBI single through the middle.
More Wichita State miscues led to the Ducks’ final run of the game in the top of the sixth. McGowan walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Bunker hit a one-out grounder that the shortstop couldn’t handle, allowing McGowan to advance. She scored on a ground out by Carlson, who registered her fourth RBI of the game.
Hansen went 3.2 innings, giving up just one run on four hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Makenna Kliethermes came on in relief with two outs and a runner on in the fourth and needed just one pitch to retire the side. She went 3.1 shutout innings, yielding just three hits in earning the win and improving to 11-6 on the season.
Noteworthy: McGowan scored a career-best four runs on Saturday which tied the UO single-game record. … Carlson’s 15th home run of the season tied her for sixth on the UO single season list with Janelle Lindvall, Koral Costa and Jill Robinson. She temporarily took over the team’s RBI lead, moving one ahead of Bunker. With four RBI Saturday night, Carlson now has 41. Bunker matched her for the team lead with her two-run single in the fourth. … The Ducks had five stolen bases Saturday night. It was the 14th time this season that the Ducks have stolen three or more bases in a game. … The Ducks didn’t commit an error for the 28th time this season. … Oregon has been error free in eight of its last nine games
On Deck: Oregon will play No. 4 overall seed Arkansas Sunday at 11 a.m. Pacific Time (ESPN+). The Ducks need to defeat the Razorbacks twice in order to advance to the Super Regional round.
